Fibonacci Numbers

How the work of Leonardo Fibonacci, a talented mathematician of the Middle Ages, can help you design and plan your quilts!

In the Finonacci sequence, each number is the sum of the previous two numbers.

So here we go – choose a number, then double it to get the second number, then add them together, then add the last two numbers together, then the last two…

Some examples:

1, 2, 3, 5, 8,

1.5, 3, 4.5, 7.5, 12

1.75, 3.5, 5.25, 8.75, 14

2, 4, 6, 10, 16

Call these numbers inches. If your quilt block is 12″, then your sashing should be 1.5″ and you can use 4.5″ or 7.5″ or a combination of these for your borders. It will give a really pleasing proportion to your quilt.

Have fun with Fibonacci,

Lyn
